Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, exhaustion, and hopelessness, to name a few characteristics. These symptoms last for a period of two weeks and have affected a person’s regular day-to-day activities, to the point that sometimes people feel as if life isn’t worth living.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mood disorder characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When a person becomes depressed, they feel sad, hopeless, and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. When their mood shifts to mania or hypomania (less extreme than mania), they may feel euphoric, full of energy, or unusually irritable.
Cyclothymia
Cyclothymia, also called cyclothymic disorder is a mood disorder in which a person’s mood goes up and down, but not as extremely as those mood shifts seeing in bipolar disorder.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal affective disorder, also called winter depression, winter blues, or summer depression, is a mood disorder directly related to changes in seasons in which a person has a regular mood throughout most of the every year but exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year, most commonly in the winter.
- Mood disorders are different from emotion dysregulation problems; at times a person could have both.
